Cordyceps for Cyclists: What Every Rider Should Know About Endurance and Power
Cycling is a sport of sustained output. Whether you're grinding up a long climb, holding tempo on the flats, or recovering between hard efforts in a bunch ride, your aerobic system is the engine. Everything else is just tuning.

A study in male cyclists found that a Cordyceps-based supplement supported better muscle tissue oxygen saturation during submaximal cycling (Colson et al., 2005, PMID: 15903375). That means working muscles were using oxygen more efficiently at a given power output.
For a cyclist, this is the difference between comfortably holding 280 watts on a 30-minute climb versus drifting into the red 15 minutes in.
What the Research Says
The research picture is not uniform, and honesty about that matters.
The most commonly cited controlled study on Cordyceps and exercise performance looked at Cs-4, a standardised strain of Cordyceps sinensis, in healthy adults over 12 weeks. The Cordyceps group saw their metabolic threshold (the point where lactate starts accumulating) increase by 10.5%, and their ventilatory threshold increase by 8.5%. The placebo group saw no change (Chen et al., 2010, PMID: 20804368).
A separate study in trained cyclists found no effect on maximal aerobic capacity or time-trial performance after five weeks of supplementation (Parcell et al., 2004, PMID: 15118196).
These results are not contradictory. They suggest Cordyceps may be most effective at shifting submaximal efficiency (how long you can hold a given pace) rather than raising peak VO₂ max in already well-trained athletes. The effect is real but subtle, and it compounds over weeks of consistent use.
Practical Benefits on the Bike
Sustained Threshold Power
When your mitochondria operate more efficiently, you spend less time in anaerobic zones during steady-state efforts. That means less lactate accumulation on long climbs, less drift in power output during tempo sections, and better sustainability across a four-hour ride.
Repeatability on Surges
Criteriums, bunch rides, and undulating courses demand repeated hard efforts with short recovery windows. Improved oxygen utilisation at the muscle level means each surge costs slightly less, and recovery between efforts is more complete.
Reduced Perceived Exertion
Multiple studies report that Cordyceps users subjectively feel they are working less at the same power output. That does not show up on a power meter, but it matters on the road. Lower perceived effort means better decision-making, better form, and less mental fatigue on long days in the saddle.
Altitude Adaptation
For cyclists training or racing at altitude, Cordyceps has shown particular promise. A 2014 study found that a Cordyceps and Rhodiola-based supplement boosted aerobic performance after short-term high-altitude training (Chen et al., 2014, PMID: 25251930). This aligns with Cordyceps's mechanism of improving oxygen utilisation under challenging conditions.
Cyclist-Specific Training Contexts
Endurance Racing
For gran fondo, stage race, or long-distance riders, the cumulative benefit of improved efficiency across hours of riding is significant. A 5-10% improvement in metabolic threshold does not sound dramatic, but over a 5-hour stage it translates to sustained power where other riders are fading.
Hill Climbs
Climbing is pure power-to-weight. Cordyceps does not make you lighter, but it can help you hold your threshold power longer. That matters on climbs where the gradient does not let you recover.
Winter Base Training
The effect of Cordyceps accumulates over weeks of consistent use. Starting supplementation during base training, when aerobic volume is highest, allows the mitochondrial efficiency gains to compound before race season begins.
Recovery Between Hard Days
Cordyceps appears to support faster clearance of metabolic stress markers post-exercise. For cyclists training five or six days a week, the ability to recover more completely between sessions is as important as the work done during them.
